Courses for Parents

Courses for Parents of Teenagers

The focus is on improving relationships with teenagers. It is not group therapy and there is no requirement to divulge anything personal. We cover a wide range of topics and our material is a blend of scientific evidence, psychology, and personal research.  We look at changes in the teenage brain as well as two psychological theories in order to enhance an understanding of changing behaviour and communication styles. We bring all this alive and make it relevant to parents through examples, offering opportunities for participants to interact, reflect and discuss alternative ways to handle real life situations with their teenagers. The aim is to learn, understand, look forward and hone your skills.

How will the course help me?

The prospect of children becoming teenagers can be daunting. Suddenly your child starts behaving very differently. Parenting can be incredibly challenging during this period, yet it is crucial to find ways of keeping the channels of communication open. Better communication positively impacts relationships and we will provide you with tools to do this and improve what is going on in your own family. Understanding changes in behaviour, in particular emotional outbursts or periods of silence, helps parents to deal with these situations more calmly. By developing the tools to better handle their own reactions, parents can help their children to manage their lives better and become more fulfilled, motivated and happy.

The courses we offer are:

Courses for Parents with Younger Children

In the many years we have spent parenting our teenagers (7 between us), training as counsellors, carrying out our own research, lecturing as well as delivering our own courses, what has become increasingly apparent to us is the gathering body of research which confirms that the smooth passage of the teenage years is critically dependent upon the quality of the relationship that is established between the parent (the mother, in particular) and child in the very early years. As mothers, we both wish we had known - when our children were babies - what science is now telling us about how to create a good relationship from the very earliest stage of child development. We have designed our courses around this.

The aim of our 3 hour course is to help mothers become more aware of their own patterns in their principal relationships from their child’s earliest years. We look at different ways of communicating and the possible impact of our communication style on our child. We also examine different child behaviours and the meaning that might lie behind them. Alongside this, we look at punishment & discipline and what is going on in the brain of your child. Small changes made by parents in the early years can help a child to develop into a more mentally, physically and psychologically robust adult.
